Minister of Tourism Olga Kefalogianni Addresses the Inauguration of the “Ekatompolis” Exhibition in Heraklion

The connection between culture and tourism, as part of the strategic push for the qualitative development of Greek tourism, was underscored by Minister of Tourism Olga Kefalogianni during her address at the inauguration of the “Ekatompolis: The World of Archaic Crete” exhibition at the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion. The event was officiated by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

“Through a modern museological approach, this exhibition highlights the cultural and political renaissance of Crete during the Archaic and Early Classical periods, demonstrating the island’s influence on the wider ancient Greek world during this era,” said the Minister. She added, “Culture provides unique global value to Greece’s tourism offering. Initiatives like ‘Ekatompolis’ deepen the connection between travelers and the places they visit.”

The Minister affirmed the Ministry of Tourism and the Greek National Tourism Organization’s (GNTO) support in promoting the exhibition and similar initiatives that enhance travelers’ immersive experiences.

Ms. Kefalogianni also announced the Ministry’s plans to allocate a building from the Regional Tourism Service to expand the operations of the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion, contributing to its redevelopment project.

She emphasized that initiatives like “Ekatompolis” not only position Greece as a year-round destination but also elevate Crete as a globally appealing location where natural beauty, hospitality, and culture intersect uniquely.

Finally, the Minister warmly congratulated the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion and all contributors to the exhibition, expressing hope that “Ekatompolis” will become a strong cultural attraction and a bridge to Greece’s rich cultural heritage.
